You know that rowing machine in the corner of gym that no one uses and no one actually wants to get near?  You know, the one that looks like a hybrid between a torture device and some sort of weaving loom?   Well, it’s called an erg (that’s an ergometer if you’re going to be proper about it) and there’s no reason you can’t be friends with it.

As a former college rower, I have become almost a little too familiar with the erg and the fitness benefits you can reap from using it.  The big obstacle though, is learning how to use the machine correctly.  You know you’ve seen people at the gym who look like complete spazzes using the erg…and you don’t want to be one of them.  More importantly, learning proper erging technique reduces your risk of injury and increases the efficiency of your workout.  It can’t get much better than that!

Here’s a great video to help you get started and conquer that erg.  Start out slow, learn how to do it right and you’ll be impressing people at the gym in no time.  If you’re not into the DIY approach, you can find a rowing club in your area or your very own erg instructor here.
