Odds and Ends: Labor Day Edition

Hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Mine was full of cookie baking, movie watching hits (21 Jump Street is hilarious, Friends with Kids is a good movie) and misses (Bachelorette is not worth seeing) and a lot of sleep. Like 13 hours a night a lot. Apparently I was tired.

On Monday, Pat and I took Rosie to Fort Funston, a.k.a. doggie beach mecca, for the first time. Although some of you might equate summer and the beach with warmth and sun, San Francisco beaches are foggy and cold, but Rosie loved it all the same.

Rosie found that heart in the sand and plopped right down in the middle of it. She sure knows how to send a message.

And now it’s time to do a complete 180 and focus on some fitness related items. This post is called odds and ends, so bear with me.

First, exciting news yesterday-Jillian Michaels announced yesterday that she will be joining the cast of Biggest Loser for the 14th season!

I’m not a diehard Biggest Loser fan, but I am a HUGE Jillian fan and have always thought something was missing from the show since Jillian’s departure. I think this season, which starts in January, will be particularly interesting for two reasons. First, Dolvett, Jillian and Bob are the fitness trifecta. Second, the three trainers will be working with young people and tackling childhood obesity for the first time in the show’s history. I know I’ll be glued to the screen.

Second on the list, and probably something you already knew if you exercise regularly-exercise makes you more productive and happier.

Lifehacker posted an article by Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich  that examines how exercise impacts happiness. Among the elements of happiness Leo considered, he looked at the body of scientific evidence that lends support to the brain benefits of exercise.

Take a look at a brain scan before and after a walk-

As if that’s not enough evidence to get out for a short walk during the work day or a difficult moment, Fast Company Design posted an information packed infographic and article about the benefits of exercise in the workplace. My favorite fact?

On a more personal note, you might have noticed that I haven’t been discussing running or training for CIM very much recently. No, I haven’t forgotten to start training, I’ve had some acute hip pain since finishing the San Francisco Marathon, so my friend Liz I decided it was best to take a break from running until I get the a-okay from my orthopedist. I won’t wax poetic, but I’ll say that it’s both welcome and weird to go from running every day to not running at all. I even commented to a friend that I felt a little “lost” without running. Don’t worry, I’ll find my way soon; my doctor’s appointment is tomorrow. Fingers crossed for good news!
